The Cathedral community is a blend of stipendiary clergy and lay staff supported by a host of volunteers without whom the life of the Cathedral would be greatly impoverished.

Here we have one of the hidden gems of Wales – it may have only been a Cathedral since 1923 but the Priory Church of St John the Evangelist has stood above the town for nearly a thousand years. There can be few buildings so old in Wales which are still in daily use for the purpose for which they were built. Visitors to the Brecon Beacons National Park come to admire a beautifully kept building in a lovely walled Close, see the Norman font, discover why we have staircases to nowhere, and light a candle before our unique icon. People come from all over the world to see our famous mementoes of the Zulu Wars. All this is FREE – thanks to an army of willing volunteer welcomers and guides.

We are dependent on many other volunteers too – in worship we have volunteers reading the lessons, ringing the bells, serving, stewarding and singing – our Choir is one of our biggest volunteer groups. Others care for the graveyard and the meadow, gardening for several hours a week. The running of our very own Cathedral shop relies upon a team of trusted volunteers. Others are pastoral volunteers - visiting the sick and bereaved. More serve on committees, organising the Cathedral's life with the Dean and Chapter, from caring for the fabric or keeping in touch with the Friends, to balancing the books and raising funds. Others offer hospitality after services or during concerts. Other volunteers come only once a year, but from a long distance: we have choirs coming from all over Britain to lead the musical side of our services when our musicians are on holiday; and for several years we have had parties of young people from all over the world working here through an organisation called Cathedral Camps.
