The Dean of Brecon Cathedral to Retire

Dean of the Cathedral since 2014

The Dean of Brecon, the Very Rev'd Dr Paul Shackerley has announced this week that he will retire on 24 May. His last service will be Choral Evensong on Sunday 26 April at 3.30pm. Churches in Ministry Areas are welcome to attend. Clergy and Canons who would like to attend and robe for the service are welcome to do so. Please notify the Precentor (precentor@breconcathedral.org.uk) if you would like to robe. The Dean will also preside at the 11.00am Eucharist on 26 April. This is not an early retirement. 2026 has always been the year of reaching 70 years of age when he must retire. With the completion of raising a major funding campaign of £3.8 million, establishing and developing the Cathedral's restoration project, and works beginning on 16 March, he considers the time is right to retire. He has every confidence in the teams he has worked with over the years to lead the project from the development stage into the next phase of delivery.

Dean Shackerley has been in the role of Dean of Brecon since September 2014. During that time he has had oversight on the Cathedral's ministry and mission that has introduced and developed strategical leadership, governance, finance and mission through many social engagement partnerships. The Dean commented, 'I would like to thank all those I have had the privilege to serve with both in the Cathedral, in the Diocese of Swansea & Brecon, and the Province. For those who have supported and prayed for me, thank you. My particular thanks to the highly skilled and professional Chapter and Project Board, and the faithful congregations, who have worked tireless to ensure the Cathedral's mission and ministry will continue for future generations to enjoy. Be assured of my continued commitment and prayers for the Cathedral's ministry and mission, the Diocese and the Province of the Church in Wales.'
